If you are thinking seriously about becoming a driving instructor it is essential that you select a training establishment very carefully. The training of driving instructors is not regulated in the same way as the training of learner drivers.
Some driving schools, and driving instructor training companies, offer training to become a driving instructor, unfortunately their training methods and course syllabus have not been approved by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).
The only safe way to choose a training establishment is to select one that has been approved by the Official Register of Driving Instructor Training (ORDIT). All establishments on the register have to pass a searching test of their training methods and course syllabus, and must comply with the strict terms and conditions set by ORDIT.
This ensures that the training you receive should be at the standard required by the Driving Standards Agency. Unfortunately this is only a voluntary register, and many schools offering training are not on the register, this means there are no guarantees as to the standard of training you will receive.
Because training to become a driving instructor can involve a substantial investment, it is essential that you check your training provider is on the ORDIT register. You can do this in several ways, the quickest way is to access the DSA website @ www.dsa.gov.uk and click on to driving instructors for the ORDIT register.
Alternatively you can telephone the DSA on 0115-901-2618 and ask for a list of approved driving instructor training establishments.
Our advice is, do not pay deposits or training fees to any company, until you have made these checks, you could receive substandard training and not have any rights to a refund.
It is essential that you have the terms and conditions in writing before you agree to sign on to any training course, this should include the trainer’s qualifications. This is very important to ensure the training establishment delivers everything they promise at the interview.
Unfortunately, some training companies promise the earth when selling a training course
but fail to deliver it when they have your payment, and usually deny promising any of it.
At Pro-Drive everything we promise will be in writing before you agree to start the course
and will be fully delivered during the course, and in most cases we give more than we promise.
Entry Conditions for Approved Driving Instructors
To have your name entered on the Register of Approved Instructors
You must:
• Hold a full British or Northern Ireland unrestricted car licence
• Have held your licence for at least four years out of the last six years
• Not been disqualified at any time during the last four years
• Be a fit and proper person to have your name entered on the register
• Be able to read a car number plate from a distance of27.5m (90ft) with or without glasses or contact lenses if worn.
• Take and pass the three examinations set by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA)
If you decide to take our free no obligation assessment your personal tutor will check that you meet all of these requirements before you make any decision to continue with the training. Please do not pay anyone a deposit or course fee until you are sure that you meet the requirements, wherever you decide to train this is extremely important, as your deposit may not be refunded at some training company’s.
If you decide to take our free assessment it will take about 1½ -2 hours, and will involve your personal tutor checking that you meet the requirements to be entered on the register and an explanation about the examinations and the job of a driving instructor. We will answer honestly, any questions you may have about becoming a driving instructor we will also do a short assessment of your driving technique.
Your personal tutor will not take a deposit or course fee on this assessment because you need time to think about a possible career change and the financial commitment involved. In fact, your tutor will advise you to seek information from other training establishments to make a comparison before making any decision.
If you decide to train with Pro-Drive, you can take delivery of your study pack within 7 days
and begin preparing for the theory examination. Please note; you can’t take the theory exam until a criminal record check is done and cleared by the Driving Standards Agency.
EXPECTED EARNINGS FOR DRIVING INSTRUCTORS
Most driving instructors work an average of 40 hours per week, however because most driving instructors are self employed, the final decision on how many hours to work is entirely up to you. The demand for driving instruction is fairly constant therefore you can work when you want.
Some driving instructors find they do not need to work weekends because they are able to do enough hours during the week, however you could work part of the weekend and treat this as overtime. The majority of pupils are between the ages of 17-22 and are quite often at college, this allows you a lot of flexibility when booking their lessons.
The following figures are an example of what you could expect to earn as a driving instructor. Where the driving school is supplying all your pupils and the car you would have a franchise fee to pay each week. However when you become established as an instructor, you could choose to run your own school this means your cost would be less, therefore increasing your earnings.
40 lessons @ £22.00 = £880
Less average expenses for driving instructor, franchise fee, fuel, car, etc; = £230
Net income for 40 lessons per week would be; = £650
Please note; To deliver 40 lessons you would work 40 hours plus travelling time between lessons, this could add another 10 hours to your working week
When you are well established as an instructor, most of your new pupils can be generated by word of mouth, this means you may no longer need to pay a franchise fee to a driving school, therefore your earnings would increase by at least as £70 per week, allowing for the cost of the car this could be increased further if you choose to work more hours or even have instructors working for you.
Most instructors work on a franchise system with a driving school for the first 12-18 months in order to become established as a driving instructor, this allows you enough time to build a good reputation, which in turn will lead to most of your new business coming through recommendations. This type of work cost you nothing to generate and is without doubt the most profitable business you will find.
